How to update your website with Claude or ChatGPT

Claude and ChatGPT can change a website directly once the site is a set of files in GitHub. On Webflow, WordPress, Wix or Squarespace the site lives inside the platform, so AI only gets as far as the platform lets it.

What the platforms let AI do today

Webflow

Webflow has an official MCP server: Claude or ChatGPT can edit the CMS, pages, elements and styles through it. It is a layer on top of the existing interface, and getting anything real built through it takes a lot of persistence.

WordPress

WordPress has an official MCP Adapter plugin. Claude or ChatGPT can use whatever the site and its plugins expose through it, and nothing more.

Wix

Wix has an official MCP server, also built into Claude as a connector. It makes API calls on your site and can create, update and publish sites.

Squarespace

Squarespace has no official MCP server and no public API for editing pages or blog posts, so Claude or ChatGPT cannot reach the site directly. Its AI tools work only inside its own editor.

What changes when the site is files

Once the site is off the platform, it is a folder of files: pages, styles and content. The folder is kept in GitHub. Claude or ChatGPT open these files and change them, the same way a developer would.

Rules written into the project make new pages from the sections the site already has and check every change before it goes live. A change is on the site in about a minute.

How to get there yourself

  1. Run a technical SEO audit of the current site first. It lists every URL and redirect, shows the errors the site already has, and gives you the structure you are moving, so old problems do not come along.
  2. Copy the content out: pages, CMS collections, images and files. Webflow and WordPress export collections and posts; on Wix and Squarespace much of it is copied by hand.
  3. Ask Claude Code to rebuild the pages in Astro, one page at a time, at the same URLs.
  4. Set up again what the platform did for you: forms need a form service, and the cookie consent banner, analytics and redirects have to be added back.
  5. Put the project in GitHub and host it on Cloudflare or a similar service.
  6. Connect Claude or ChatGPT to the GitHub repository, so your team can ask for changes.
  7. Point the domain at the new hosting, and keep the old site until every page checks out. Cloudflare has an official MCP server, so Claude can do much of the hosting and DNS setup for you.

The slow part is the first pages and the design system every later page is built from. Current models still do not make those decisions well, and how easy the site is to work on later depends on them.

If you asked me for advice, I would say go as slowly as you can at the start. Take the time to learn the site yourself: look around and work out how it is put together before you hand anything to an agent. If the agent does it all from day one, you will have no picture of the site in your head, and you will not be able to tell when something it did is wrong.

Or I do the move

I do this move for Webflow, WordPress, Squarespace and Wix sites. It costs $1,999 for a small site and from $5,000 for a normal marketing site. More on how the move works.
